OUR MESSAGE
Dear [Representative's Name],
I am writing to you as a concerned resident of Dublin Mid-West to emphasise the importance of developing and revitalising market spaces within our community.
Recent community research shows overwhelming public support for market spaces, with 94.7% of local respondents expressing interest in such venues. With the European Commission having found Ireland to be the loneliest country in the European Union, we must direct our public infrastructure into building a stronger, better community for Dublin. Dublin’s community is seeking accessible, sheltered and safe community hubs that socially engage the public, and we believe markets are a perfect solution for this.
By revising our markets, we can create more meaningful social engagement among residents, tourists and a wider Ireland, while promoting small businesses, locality and sustainability. We can also utilise derelict spaces in the city centre to transform them into cultural community hubs.
By having multiple market spaces, we can diffuse the gentrification and footfall that may negatively affect current residents, we can also allow for a wider range of needs to be met through concentrated specialties in each space.
Community suggestions also include that business plans surrounding temporary and permanent market stalls should be implemented. Having semi-permanent market stalls occupying parts of these market spaces increases marketability, virality and appeals to a younger demographic while still ensuring the steady reliability of other market stalls for older demographics.
I believe that The Iveagh Markets (Francis Street), St Andrews Church (Suffolk Street) and the Independent House (Abbey Street) present excellent opportunities for establishing such market spaces. All spaces listed are derelict, however their locations are ideal due to footfall, public transport links and ease of accessibility. These areas could be transformed from their current states into dynamic community hubs that serve multiple social and economic needs.
I urge you to consider allocating resources and political support towards the development of market spaces in Dublin’s city centre. I understand Smithfield’s market space development is underway, however we need multiple spaces for our community to thrive. As Dublin’s population continues to grow, the lack of community driven hubs has become apparent. By investing in these communal assets, we can reduce anti-social behaviour and in turn, build stronger connections, deepen our contemporary cultural spaces, and create a vibrant, inclusive community.
Thank you for your consideration and commitment to our community.
Sincerely, [Your Name]
